Out Of The Woods by Nickel Creek

Any brides or brides-to-be out there who love this song, please call me... I've been dying to do a live motion couples shoot to a cover of this song.

It is dreamy, romantic, cinematic, elegant, sad, and sweet... Bittersweet for those of us who have never before been engaged or married, but always something to hope for.

It's going to run around in my head all day.

(p.s., Nickel Creek, you are the best!!!)

Sia's "Breathe Me"

So while wrapping up some editing earlier today, this song came on Pandora... and I remembered what I forgot I had to tell all of you. It is this:

There a few songs IN THE WORLD that I love more than "Breathe Me" by Sia. It speaks to everything in my life... whether happy in love or waiting for the lonely to pass, I hear this song, and I feel understood.

Love it. You should listen.

The Hotness of Pink

LOVE LOVE LOVE this color combo for the summer... Hot pink and white with pops of yellow and little splashes of blue.

Joplin, Missouri

Leaving tomorrow on a mission trip to Joplin, Missouri, to help those affected by the tornado... And it's got me thinking about what it would be like (especially for me, as a photographer with hundreds of thousands of archived files) to completely start over, to have the slate erased, to be completely all you are in the present moment with nothing left from the past but a memory.

This song by Mindy Smith has been in my head for weeks now...

Best Song: Tracy Chapman's "The Promise"

Today this song inspires me by SLOWING ME DOWN... No joke. :)

Sometimes the best songs are the melancholy ones.... you know, the ones that make you stop and think about the people you love... the ones that make you treasure the times you have (had) together.

Today is one of those days.

Photo Tip of the Day: Grab a Grab Shot

One of the best tips I've been given is to never leave a shoot without taking at least ONE random, artistic, hurried, "grab" shot of something other than what you were hired to shoot.

If it's a portrait session, this means taking a picture of the lone yellow daffodil blowing in the wind beside your car in an empty parking lot. I grabbed this shot right after a family portrait session last week while I was putting my gear into the trunk of my car. No light testing, no reflectors, no color balancing, no calculated framing or composition, no photoshop... just a quick press of the shutter button. That's all.

Frequently these grab shots won't amount to much more than filler in your Lightroom catalog, but I can often use the colorful ones in abstract, unexpected ways that surprise and delight my clients. I often use flower photos like these to mat individual portraits or add a little artistic flair to a textured wall... usually the client will say something like, "Oh, I'm so glad you captured that beautiful flower on film... I noticed it as I was leaving, but just didn't have the time to stop and look at it!"

Honestly, as a photographer, you have the rare opportunity to stop time, if only for a moment, and the one spontaneous image you grab could just be the one your client will remember forever.

This particular photo will be used as a background image to enhance an amazing set of eyes, but I also kind of like it all by itself.... Funny how that happens, eh? :)

Music I Love: "Man Of The Hour" by Norah Jones

When I hear this song it feels like I am singing a love letter to my dog... which is strange, but then again, you don't know Mikey. :)

Ahh, this dog is an angel.

Anyway, I highly recommend Norah's song to anyone. Listening makes bad relationships seem better, and good relationships seem even more awesome.

Plus, Norah's voice is, simply, lovely.

Cool product: Physician's Formula Jumbo Lash Mascara

Currently obsessed with this mascara... Not only is the packaging ADORABLY unique (and shiny!), it's "organic" and it has a super fluffy brush. Love it.

Photo Tip: Using Cool Umbrellas

Vivy © Leia Jobe 2011

For cool textured shots, have your model hold up a patterned umbrella between her and the sun (which, in this portrait, is behind the model's back). It provides an awesome pop of color and also perfect "open shade" for your portrait light. Try this one:

This very talented musician is also uber smart.... and incredibly sweet.

Paper Hats by Katsuya Kamo

Just saw this article about copy paper hats and it got me reminiscing about a fun art school assignment from my Hallmark days...

Katsuya Kamo Paper Hats for Chanel

Music: "Manhattan" by Blossom Dearie

WOW.... New favorite song. ABSOLUTE favorite. I highly recommend listening to this song; it can even make mundane things like doing your taxes feel way more bubbly, happy, enjoyable.

When you hear something that makes your present life equate to a screenplay, you know it's a gem.

LOVE it.

Photo Tip: Using Color To Create Energy

© 2010 Leia Jobe

Throw a splash of color against a monochromatic background... this draws the eye immediately and gives a touch of dimension to an otherwise plain setting. In this case, I used selective coloring (i.e., leaving only the skirt in full color and muting everything else) via tools in Lightroom... but most modern photo editing software is capable.

AND when photographing little girls, you can't go wrong with a flowy ballerina skirt.

Photo Tip: Think Inside The Box

Clayton © Leia Jobe 2009

Quick tip today for photographing kids: think inside the box.

2-year olds may be your toughest photo subjects ever, so you have to be clever when chasing those authentic, non-"cheese" expressions.

For this photo, I actually sat inside one of the empty cardboard boxes that had contained a large child's toy... It's a great idea for curious kids... And had this little guy open the lid.

There was just enough room inside this box for me and my camera, but to pull this off, you have to be willing to do the following: 1) fold yourself up tight, 2) be quiet, 3) not look scary, 4) have an assistant, 5) watch your shutter speed and light (meaning, you should adjust your camera settings prior to the box being opened), and 6) be patient. Also don't be shocked when this turns into a melee at the birthday party... Kids will LOVE this.

Stuff I Love

I'm recently on a strict no-shopping diet, but I still can't help but foster my love for consumerism by offering you these awesome links to the lovely products with which I fill my days... when I am not chasing after a zen-like existence, that is.

Ahhhh, love this perfume...

Love this... And actually could totally wear every outfit in the film...

Love... although laughing and yoga sometimes do NOT mix.

Cute Baby Portrait Ideas

I'm a huge fan of mixing bright colors for a happy pop of contrast... it adds a little pizazz, especially when used wisely as a cute baby portrait background.

Here is baby Claire in a fresh mix of pinks, greens, and yellows... add that to the perfect blue of her perfect little eyes, and you've got a fresh, modern little headshot.

Recent Portraits

Some of my recent portrait work... Taken in about .5 seconds between the absolute chaos of a 5-minute family session, using a Canon 50D. Loving stripes lately, so this was a serendipitous little outfit. :)
can you say adorable?

Trouble by Never Shout Never

listening to: "Trouble" by Never Shout Never.
This song just popped up on my Pandora station, and I had to stop what I was doing to find out who was singing... Kinda reminds me of a teenie/poppy/ukulele version of Jason Mraz (who I love, by the way). Totally catchy, slightly annoying, and completely reminiscent of a movie I've seen somewhere... Which reminds me, does anybody else completely love Jay Baruchel and Alexis Bledel in "I'm Reed Fish?" And Schuyler Fisk, you are pretty awesome, too.
